Libyan police have seized a large number of narcotic tablets while chasing smugglers near the border with Tunisia, the Interior Ministry of the Government of National Accord (GNA) said in a statement on Monday.

The smugglers were travelling in two cars. One of the cars overturned, and the driver managed to flee in another vehicle. The statement pointed out that during the inspection of the vehicle that overturned, 943 packets of ‘Larica 300 mg’ manufactured in India were found inside.

Last month, Benghazi’s police seized about 800kg of cannabis hidden inside a truck in the city of Ajdabiya. The Anti-Drugs Department has estimated the drugs’ value at about 14 million Libyan dinars. The drugs came from Algeria to the Libyan city of Zintan, and were en route to Tobruk where they were due to be distributed.

Drug trade in Libya has proliferated since the 2011 civil war. In December, the Maltese authorities seized 612kg of cocaine en route to Libya, in a record-breaking haul worth some €69 million euros.
