The Libyan House of Representatives, in consultation with the High Council of State during their meeting in Cairo, reached several key agreements outlined in their final statement.
They reaffirmed Libya’s exclusive ownership of its political process through official institutions and stressed the need for continued dialogue between both councils.
They also agreed to implement the outcomes of the trilateral meeting held in Cairo under the Arab League’s auspices on 10 March 2024, which includes restructuring the executive authority.
Additionally, they emphasised the importance of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) adhering to its original mandate of assisting Libyan institutions under the political agreement.
The statement also expressed firm support for the Palestinian people’s right to establish an independent state, condemned the ongoing aggression against Palestine, backed Egypt and the Arab League’s opposition to forced displacement, and called for decisive action from the League.
Furthermore, the two chambers agreed that their next meeting would take place in a Libyan city to advance the implementation of their agreements.
The meeting, held at the invitation of the Egyptian Parliament, brought together 96 members of the House of Representatives and 75 members of the High Council of State to discuss Libya’s political future and seek solutions to end institutional divisions.
The Libyan delegation expressed gratitude to Egypt’s leadership, government, and people for hosting the discussions and supporting Libya’s path towards stability.
