EU Monitoring Turkey’s Actions in Eastern Mediterranean

Joseph Borrell, the European Union High Commissioner for Security and Foreign Policy, said that member states are closely monitoring Turkey’s actions in the eastern Mediterranean.

Peter Stano, the spokesperson for Borrell, said “Our position has not changed, we still believe that these actions are illegal and cause for concern.”

Stano stressed that “illegal Turkish actions have been the focus of many discussions at various levels,” pointing out that the European Union established a legal framework in November 2019 to apply restrictive measures against Turkey, which was followed by the imposition of sanctions in 2020.

The European Union official stated that “If Turkey continues what it is doing, we will respond and act within the framework that we set.”
