Russia Accuses Turkey of Sending Syrian Extremists to Fight in Libya

On Thursday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said it had confirmed the existence of Syrian extremists fighting alongside the forces of the Government of National Accord (GNA) in Tripoli.

It warned that the continued fighting in the North African country threatened catastrophic consequences.

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova expressed Moscow’s deep concern over the disastrous situation in western Libya. This is in light of the increasing number of crimes reportedly committed by GNA forces.

Zakharova stated that a large number of gunmen transported from Syria included members of the terrorist-designated ‘Al-Nusra Front’. They are now believed to be fighting in Libya under the name “Tahrir Al Sham”.

The spokeswoman claimed that the truce announced by the Libyan National Army (LNA) during the Holy month of Ramadan and against the backdrop of the global COVID-19 pandemic was marked by repeated violations by the GNA.

She added that the continuation of these actions will exacerbate the crisis and drag Libya and its people into catastrophe.

These remarks came after a high-level GNA delegation visited Moscow to meet with Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov. The United Nations recently announced that the warring parties in Libya had agreed to resume ceasefire negotiations.
