Dbaiba & Bathily Discuss Libyan Elections

In a significant encounter, the Prime Minister of Libya’s Government of National Unity (GNU), Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba held talks with the UN Envoy to Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily. Their dialogue predominantly centered around the forthcoming elections, and the current political landscape in Libya.

During the talks, Bathily provided Dbaiba with insights from his latest round of meetings with diverse Libyan stakeholders, emphasizing their role in facilitating smooth elections, and ending the transitional phases. Such engagements are pivotal, as Libya ardently seeks to fortify its democratic foundations.

Underlining the nation’s aspirations, the PM asserted the government’s unwavering dedication to ensuring that the elections are held under equitable, and transparent regulations.

Since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has been marred by political instability and factional infighting. The country became divided between multiple rival administrations, primarily the Tripoli-based GNU and the Benghazi-based Libyan Parliament, each backed by different local and international actors.

Efforts to unify the country and establish a stable government have been ongoing. The UN, as an impartial mediator, has been instrumental in facilitating dialogue between these factions. The appointment of Dbaiba marked a significant milestone in the reconciliation process.

Elections, expected to cement the transition to a more permanent and unified government, have been a primary focus. However, finalizing the electoral laws remains a challenge, given the diverse interests in the country. The meeting between Dbaiba and Bathily emphasizes the shared commitment to facilitating a fair, transparent, and inclusive electoral process.
