On Sunday, Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), held talks with Russian Ambassador to Libya Haidar Rashid Aganin at the LNA General Command Headquarters in Rajma.

The discussions centered on Libya’s political situation and the pressing need to create favorable conditions for holding long-awaited national elections.

During the meeting, both leaders emphasized the importance of international cooperation to stabilize Libya and support its democratic transition. Ambassador Aganin reiterated Russia’s commitment to backing Libya’s political roadmap, while Haftar underlined the critical role of elections in uniting the country and restoring stability.

This engagement follows a recent meeting between Haftar and British Ambassador to Libya, Martin Longden, which focused on fostering collaboration between the two nations and addressing Libya’s ongoing challenges. These diplomatic efforts highlight Haftar’s intent to maintain a central role in shaping Libya’s future while engaging with key international stakeholders.

Libya remains at a crossroads, struggling to overcome political divisions and delays in the electoral process. With disagreements over constitutional frameworks and eligibility criteria stalling progress, the call for elections has grown louder among Libyan citizens and international observers. Haftar’s emphasis on the democratic process reflects a broader aspiration to resolve Libya’s crises and chart a path toward peace and prosperity.

Russia’s involvement in Libya underscores its significant role in international efforts to mediate the conflict. As a UN Security Council member, Moscow has actively engaged with various factions, advocating for stability and exploring opportunities for economic collaboration, particularly in the energy and infrastructure sectors.
