On Thursday, Libya called for an urgent meeting of the Arab League’s permanent representatives to address Israeli aggression in Syria, including recent airstrikes and the occupation of additional territories in the Golan Heights.

The emergency session, held at the League’s headquarters in Cairo, aimed to forge a unified Arab response to escalating tensions in the region.

The meeting was chaired by Libya’s Permanent Representative to the Arab League, Abdulmutallib Thabet, who also serves as the country’s Ambassador to Egypt. Dr. Hussein Abdelhamid, Minister Plenipotentiary at the Libyan Mission, joined the session, which focused on condemning Israeli actions and discussing the need for collective Arab measures.

In a statement, Libya’s delegation highlighted the critical nature of the situation, urging Arab countries to adopt a firm and united position. The session centered on Israeli airstrikes on Syrian territory and the expansion of control over the Golan Heights, a move that further destabilizes the region and undermines Syrian sovereignty.

The Golan Heights, occupied by Israel since 1967, remains a focal point of regional tensions. Despite repeated United Nations resolutions declaring Israel’s annexation of the territory illegal, the occupation persists, with Israeli military activities drawing condemnation from the international community. Recent airstrikes have intensified calls for an Arab-led response to what many view as a violation of international law and a threat to regional peace.

Libya’s initiative to convene the Arab League session underscores its commitment to Arab solidarity and its active engagement with regional issues, despite its own domestic challenges.

As tensions in Syria continue to rise, Arab leaders face the challenge of navigating complex geopolitical dynamics to protect sovereignty and maintain stability.
