Egyptian Foreign Minister Urges International Effort to Reach Settlement in Libya

On Thursday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry called on the international community to show seriousness and exert greater effort in pushing for the peace process in Libya.

In a press conference with the visiting EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell, Shoukry said that “consultations continue with European partners to maintain the sovereignty of the war-torn country, as well as to boost the rights of the Libyan people in facing terrorism, military, and foreign interventions”.

He highlighted the unwavering Egyptian position of supporting a political solution that preserves the unity and territorial integrity of Libya. Shoukry also stressed Egypt’s keenness to continue its coordination with EU partners to finalize a solution.

Borrell said that the EU has achieved some success in its IRINI naval operation, in monitoring the UN arms embargo on Libya. He added that Libya will remain in chaos if the flow of arms and mercenaries continued.

Borrell’s visit to Cairo came a day after he concluded a visit to Libya. He reiterated the EU’s support for a resolution of the conflict and the need for concrete action to follow the recently announced ceasefire.

On August 21, the Prime Minister of the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) Fayez Al-Sarraj and the Speaker of the eastern-based House of Representatives (HoR), Ageela Saleh, agreed to a ceasefire in the country, presidential and parliamentary elections, and the resumption of oil exports.

“Cairo supports any step to reach a truce and a political settlement in Libya. This must achieve security and stability for the Libyan people”, Shoukry added.
