Armed clashes erupted early on Monday in the western Libyan city of Ajilat, raising concerns over a possible escalation in the country’s fragile security situation.

Local media reported that the fighting broke out between armed groups from the nearby city of Zawiya and rival elements based in Ajilat. Heavy weapons, including mortars, were used during the confrontation, causing damage to residential areas and resulting in casualties among civilians.

Residents shared videos on social media showing a heavy presence of fighters and military build-ups across several areas, while the sound of gunfire continued for hours. The intensity of the clashes forced local schools and educational institutions to suspend classes temporarily to ensure student safety.

No official statement has yet been issued by authorities to clarify the causes of the violence or confirm the number of casualties. However, security sources indicated that efforts are ongoing to contain the situation and prevent further escalation.

Ajilat has long been considered a hotspot for smuggling activities, including fuel trafficking and irregular migration networks. These illicit operations have contributed to the proliferation of armed groups and recurring clashes in the area.

Previous security campaigns by forces affiliated with the Government of National Unity have targeted criminal networks in the city. While these operations aimed to restore stability, they have also sparked controversy due to reported damage to civilian property.

The latest violence highlights the ongoing challenges facing Libya as it struggles to maintain security and establish effective state control over areas affected by militia activity.

Analysts warn that without sustained security reforms and unified command structures, such incidents may continue to threaten stability in western Libya and beyond.
