MP Youssef Al-Agouri, Head of the Libyan Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, discussed the Libyan crisis with the French Ambassador to Libya, Beatrice Le Fraper du Hellen. The two sides stressed the importance of continuous coordination in order to support political dialogue to resolve the Libyan crisis.

During his phone call with the French Ambassador, Al-Agouri stressed the Parliament’s keenness to strengthen Libyan-French relations in all fields, praising the French positions that reject foreign interference as well as supporting the stability of Libya.

For her part, du Hellen stressed France’s keenness in continuing coordination with the Libyan Parliament and maintaining French efforts to restore peace to Libya.

The French Foreign Minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian, had stressed over the past few days the need to stabilise the ceasefire in place in Libya. According to him, this stabilisation is a first step to restore peace and after a period of fierce battles between the Libyan National Army (LNA) and the armed forces affiliated with the Government of National Accord (GNA).

In August, the GNA declared a ceasefire, and the LNA agreed on the truce.

The GNA controls the capital city Tripoli and the western areas of Libya. On the other hand, the LNA controls the eastern and southern areas.

The Parliament Speaker, Ageela Saleh, and the Leader of the LNA, Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, met face to face in the Egyptian coastal city of Hurghada to discuss the crisis and implement a permanent ceasefire.

The US, EU countries and the UN have welcomed the negotiations, considering them to be essential for a sustainable ceasefire.
