On Wednesday, the Constitutional Committee formed by the Libyan Parliament and the High Council of State (HCS) agreed to hold a constitutional referendum before the general elections set for 24 December 2020.

The two sides held a meeting on 19-20 January, in Hurghada, Egypt. The United Nation Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), thanked the Egyptian authorities for hosting the meeting.

UNSMIL said in a statement that the committee will reconvene in Hurghada on 9-11 February, and will invite the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) to attend and participate in their referendum discussion.

The statement added that the participants asked UNSMIL to help implement the decision, and provide the necessary support for conducting the referendum once the date is agreed.

UNSMIL commended the two delegations on their decision to meet within the framework of the roadmap agreed by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF), and for the delegations’ pledge to consult closely with HNEC moving forward.

“The Mission will continue to engage with all relevant stakeholders to support the electoral process leading to a democratic and stable Libya,” the statement noted.
