UK Stresses Importance of Libyan Elections

The UK Ambassador to Egypt, Gareth Bayley, renewed his country’s public position in support of holding the Libyan elections as scheduled on December 24th, and the exit of mercenaries and foreign forces from the country.

During a televised interview broadcast on Egypt’s ON channel, Bayley added that the UK’s position on the Libyan crisis is crystal clear. He stressed the need for a political and electoral process to establish an internal military situation led by the Libyans themselves.

He said that Britain plays the role of a leader in the Security Council to mobilize the formulation of diplomacy that helps the Libyan people to move forward. He noted that this is a great task and a responsibility that “we bear on our shoulders.”

Bayley urged European countries not to impose their vision on other countries, referring to the interventions in Libya. He called on the Libyans to lead their own destiny in their own way.

Notably, the British Minister for the Middle East and North Africa in the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, James Cleverly, stressed the need to hold credible presidential and parliamentary elections in Libya on the 24th of December.

This came during his meeting with the Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity (GNU), Abdelhamid Al-Dbaiba, on the sidelines of the COP 26 United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference in Glasgow.

“We agreed on the importance of removing all foreign forces and creating new opportunities for Libyan and British businesses to cooperate on Libya’s green energy transition,” Cleverly tweeted.

On Sunday, the Libyan High National Elections Commission (HNEC) announced the opening of nominations for the presidential and parliamentary elections, starting on Monday, and the start of the voter card distribution process.

The Head of National Elections Commission, Emad Al-Sayeh indicated that the acceptance of candidates for the elections of the Head of State will continue until November 22nd. It added that applications for candidacy for the parliamentary elections will continue to be accepted until December 7th.
