Libya’s High National Elections Commission (HNEC) said in a statement that it will announce the date for candidates to register for Libya’s Presidential elections on this Sunday.

Meanwhile, Khaled Al-Mannai, an Outreach Official told the ‘Libya Panorama’ television channel that registration will begin on on Monday, 8 November.

Earlier this week, Head of HNEC, Emad Al-Din Al-Sayeh confirmed that registration for candidates in Libya’s Presidential and Parliamentary elections will be opened in November.

During a press conference, he stressed that the first round of the Presidential elections will be on 24 December, while the second round will take place simultaneously with the Parliamentary elections, which “will then be held at a later date.”

Al-Sayeh emphasised that the impartiality of the commission and the independence of the Libyan judiciary are, “the guarantees for the integrity of the upcoming elections. The goal of the elections is to unify the institutions of the Libyan state, and the basic guarantees for it are that the HNEC is an independent and impartial body that is not subject to any political party.”

He described the commission as “a technical body” specialised in implementing the electoral laws referred to it by the legislative authority, represented by the Libyan Parliament.

Regarding the mechanism by which the elections will be monitored, Al-Sayeh said that “local and international organisations are invited to observe the elections scheduled for December this year.”

Notably, the Libyan Parliament approved a law for Parliamentary elections to take place a month after the planned 24 December Presidential elections.
