Libya’s giants Al-Ahly Tripoli have qualified for the semi-finals of the CAF (Confederation of African Football) Confederation Cup, after defeating their compatriots, Al-Ittihad 1-0.

The two teams met on Sunday, at the second leg of the championship’s quarter-finals at Benghazi’s Benina Martyrs Stadium. Al-Ahly midfielder, Ayoub Ayyad scored the winning goal in the 19th minute of the first half, after a rebound from the Al-Ittihad goalkeeper.

Notably, CAF used the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in Libya for the first time, during the game. The first leg match last week, ended in a goalless draw.

Al-Ittihad remains the local league champion, with Al-Ahly in second-place.

Al-Ahly are due to face South Africa’s Orlando Pirates, who have qualified after defeating Tanzania’s Simba 4-3 on penalties. The first leg will be held on 5 May, while the second leg will be held on 15 May.

Four teams have qualified for the semi-finals; Libya’s Al-Ahly, South Africa’s Orlando Pirates, Morocco’s RS Berkane, and Congo’s Tp Mazembe.
